Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities Rules | Implementation of new labelling norms extended
The Central Government in November 2021 had modified the labelling norms on packages for retail sale which were to come into effect from 1 April 2022.
However, vide the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules, 2022 dated 28 March 2022, the Central Government has extended the implementation of the revised labelling norms to 1 October 2022.
Further, a few revisions have also been made in the labelling norms as follows:
(a) |
Unit sale price is not required to be declared separately where the retail price is equal to the unit price; and |
(b) |
No prosecution shall be initiated against importers/ manufacturers/ packers in respect of retail sale packages which are labelled as per the amendments and in anticipation of the earlier date of implementation, i.e. 1 April 2022. |
Comment:
The extension of the date of the implementation is a welcome step. Further, dispensation of unit sale price for unit retail package is a step in the right direction, as said information was merely duplication of available information.
The codification of non-prosecution for use of revised packing materials which were supposed to have come in circulation on 1 April 2022 will provide businesses with sufficient flexibility to meet with the extended timeline without any departmental reprisal.
